Creating a Website as an Educational Resource: Superbugs

The people behind Superbugs include a team of hardworking scientists who are passionate about microbiology and educating young people. They first approached us with the idea to create an online resource back in 2020, and now have a website that not only promotes the field of microbiology but also helps pupils discover it in a fun and engaging way.

We created a Squarespace Website as it provided a great template for educational and interactive information. We often talk with clients who have a website where it is a bit of a black box, in that they cannot manage it themselves and have to use a developer to make any amendments, which can be costly and time-consuming. This is why when clients want some control we recommend using platforms like Squarespace that help build beautiful websites and are straightforward to use.

Accessibility

The goal for the Superbugs website was to create something that was both user-friendly and fully accessible so that the team could eventually take full ownership. Squarespace offered us a smooth and practical template that could be easily adapted and enhanced as the Superbugs project grew. We’re happy to see that after some basic training, the team understand the functionality of their website and have continued to develop the site since working with us.

Translation

Another important element for this particular client was translation. Based at the universities of Bristol and Cardiff, the team wanted the site to offer both Welsh and English. We decided to integrate the Weglot translation app which offers quick translation with zero maintenance. Since completing the website, the team are now in the process of adding further languages to further broaden audience engagement.

Interactive Content

A final focus for this site was offering unique ways for audience participation. As a learning tool, Superbugs needed to accommodate multiple ways of learning through games, videos, and storytelling. With this in mind, we made sure that the website was designed to integrate multi-media and interactive content that would serve to enhance the scientific information provided.

Client Feedback:

“Maxim consulting have worked closely with the Superbugs initiative throughout the conceptualisation, design and delivery of our new online educational platform (www.superbugs.online). Geoff & Kirk showed real enthusiasm to involve themselves with our co-productive elements of the project, and this certainly set the foundations for us to produce the high-quality end product that is now live across Wales and the UK.”
